Legalizing abortion has been a very controversial topic for decades. Many people believe that abortion should be legal because it is under a woman’s right of privacy in the US Constitution, a woman can decide what she wants to do with her body and discarding of an embryo or fetus is not murder because the baby is unborn. But, many people believe that abortion should be illegal; they think that having an abortion is murder or assault, no matter how developed, or undeveloped, a fetus or embryo is. Women have the right to do anything they want with their bodies, and abortion should be pro-choice and legal. Women could be traumatized, very young, or be hurt in the pregnancy. Having a baby at that time could be harmful to the baby, just as much to the mother or more.
In the United States Constitution, the Right of Privacy lets US citizens possess privacy in their lives. Under this right, women are allowed to do whatever they want to do with their bodies. The Constitution states, “a guarantee of certain rights or zones or privacy.” This allows women to have the right of getting an abortion and have the privacy of getting one. In a Supreme Court argument by the name of Roe V. Wade, they were debating on whether a Texas citizen, Roe, should be allowed to get an abortion. In the end, the Court decided, “a woman’s right to an abortion fell within the right to privacy protected by the Fourteenth Amendment.” This changed abortion laws of 46 states, and they proved how even the Constitution says it is all right for a woman to get an abortion because of the Right of Privacy. Also, in the Roe V. Wade case, the
Court decided that in the first trimester of a pregnancy, a woman has total control over her body and her baby. Supreme Court Justice in 1992, Sandra Day O’Connor, wrote a decision into Planned Parenthood v. Casey, “The ability of women to participate equally in the economic and social life of the Nation has been facilitated by their ability to control their reproductive lives.” She is stating that to confirm women are equal in the life of the US, they should be able to control their reproductive lives, saying that a woman can do what she wants with her body during a pregnancy.
Studies show that women denied of abortions have a much stronger chance of becoming victims of domestic violence, to be below the poverty line, be on public welfare, and be unemployed. Studies from a University of California at San Francisco show that women rejected of abortions at abortion clinics, due to passing the gestational limits at the clinic, were double as likely to be victims of domestic violence. This is because a woman is more likely to stay in an abusive relationship if she is denied an abortion. Also, 44% of the women who had abortions have gone on unemployment benefits. However, compare it to the 76% of women who were rejected from abortions that are on the unemployment benefits. This is because most women in need of an abortion are already below the poverty line. So, giving birth and taking care of a child will eat up more of the mothers money, leading them to losing their jobs. Some pro-life people say that women have to pay for their consequences, but nobody wants their child coming into the world unhappy and unwanted. 38% of women that took a 2005 survey, Perspectives on Sexual and Reproductive Health, said that a baby would interfere with their career and goals, and 73% said that they did not have the money to take care and support a child. Unable to support a child and the child interfering with their education and careers are just some reasons why women would get abortions and be below the poverty line.
Some women refused from an abortion try to give themselves, or ask an uneducated person to give an abortion, most times killing, temporarily disabling, or permanently disabling the woman. Legalizing abortion’s would also reduce crime, because the woman would not have to go into alleyways and get an illegal abortion, and most children born into a bad home are more likely to become criminals. About 68,000 women every year die due to trying to give themselves abortions or illegally getting abortions from unsanitary, uneducated people. 42 million women every year have unplanned pregnancies, and 20 million try to get abortions. Every 8 minutes, a woman dies due to complications in an unsafe abortion according to the World Health Center (WHO). Also according to the WHO, they define abortion as, “a procedure either by persons lacking the necessary skills or in an environment lacking minimal medical standards or both.” Millions of women every year become disabled due to unsafe abortions. Legalizing abortions would allow women to be safe, have control of their bodies, and it would allow tens of thousands of women to survive every year.
Women should be able to do whatever they want with their bodies. Abortion should be legal and pro-choice. The mother could not be in the right state or mind or have complications that could lead to having the baby living a bad life and be hurting just as much as the mother. Every year, tens of thousands of women die due to unsafe abortions, women who were denied abortions are more likely to become poor and victims of domestic violence, and under the Right of Privacy in the US Constitution, women are allowed to do what they want with their own bodies. Legalizing abortions could save thousands and it would reduce crime. So, would you let a woman take control of her own body, or leave her to be disabled or die due to an unsafe abortion?
