Is Obesity really a disease? Many people are asking health advisors this question. ‘’The American Medical Association (AMA) in 2013 diagnosed obesity as a disease’’ (Obesity Medicine Association). In my opinion, obesity is not a disease because it comes down to a more of a personal problem, like decision-making.
Obesity normally happens when you eat too much sugar or unhealthy foods and fats. Not exercising is another culprit of obesity. We all know unhealthy foods are addictive. It seems like obesity comes with more of an addiction like caffeine or drugs.
When you do go for a run or even walking to dinner, you are getting some exercise instead of sitting on the couch and not being active. Even walking short distances could help you stay in shape and be healthy because you are burning calories. When you are sitting on the couch and not doing anything productive all the time it could lead to obesity.
Obesity can lead to both long term and short-term disease such as diabetes, heart disease or many more. There are treatments too; you would have to meet with a team of health professional for example, an obesity specialist to help you make changes to your diet and physical activities. Since obesity leads to other diseases, then does that qualify obesity as a disease? The A.M.A should not be considering obesity as a disease because of the effects after you become obese.
Obesity is not a disease because it seems to be more of a personal problem. This could happen by eating too much unhealthy foods, and not exercising. In addition, it is very expensive to get treatments and it could lead to more disease after the treatments. After all the treatments and medicine is it really worth being obese instead of eating healthy and working out for at least 30 minutes a day.
