Banning of Football
Should the most popular sport in America be banned? Many parents are getting worried about their kids playing football because of the colossal risk of injury, especially head injuries. It is more dangerous out on the soccer field compared to the football field because players are wearing less protective equipment.
All sports in the world have a risk of injury and almost all have a risk of head injury.According to the author Jacquelyn Fitzpatrick, “The number of head injuries sustained in soccer is second to that of tackle football, and yet only in the rarest of circumstances do players wear head protection.” At least in football there is head protection, chest protection, shoulder protection, etc. Therefore, if you are worried about head injuries in football, and you want to ban it, then should we ban soccer? Alternatively, think about hockey, they take some brutal hits. Also even in basketball there are no pads and there have been many injuries in the NBA lately. If football is banned then there should be no sports because everything has a risk.
We are getting more knowledge on the topic and now doctors and trainers know how to detect a head injury before it gets worse. “We have realized that even if a person is conscious the whole time, they could still be concussed and at risk for even more brain trauma if they are not allowed the proper recovery time” (Fitzpatrick). In addition, if someone stays in the game and they are not feeling good, headache, dizzy, nauseous etc. it is their fault for staying in the game and possibly making the concussion worse. Doctors are getting more and more information everyday about concussions and they will only learn more.
The world is getting more and more advanced every day and so is football. The NFL is working hard to get more advanced and lower concussions. They have gotten more padded helmets and they are cracking down on helmet-to-helmet hits. If you hit someone with your helmet then your team gets a fifteen-yard penalty and you get either a warning or an ejection. Even with the injuries, the game is a lot more than people think. According to Nicholas DiMartino, “We should continue to play football because the game teaches you more than the physical aspect of it; it teaches you to work with your teammates to achieve a common goal. People come from all backgrounds to play this game. I think that it is the only game where a 360 pound dude and a kid who can run a 4.4 forty yard dash can work together to reach the goal of winning it all. And because of football the day Sunday has turned into football day nothing else.”
Football is a dangerous sport but the players sign up for it and they put their put their body on the line because they love the game. The players would be furious if the game was banned. The most popular sport in North America is being debated if it should be banned or not, I just don’t understand, do you?
