Should students have to participate in the swimming unit in P.E.? Some students do not like having to participate in the swimming unit in P.E. because they feel self-conscious. This causes lower self-esteem, anxiety, and stress. Students should not have to participate in the swimming unit if they do not feel comfortable with it because there is many negative effects.
Some students feel self-conscious being so exposed to other people. In addition, they can develop a lower self-esteem due to feeling like this. Studies show that LGTBQ students, students who have a dis/ability, or obese students participate less because they are bullied while they are in gym class. Students who may not feel comfortable about what they look like find it hard to have to change in front of others because they are embarrassed. Studies found out that kids only spend an average of 3 minutes being active per gym class due to the teachers explaining the unit and students standing on the sidelines. Also, students with a dis/ability like Asperger’s, autism or Down syndrome have a hard time in P.E. because they become anxious and stressed because they are afraid that they will be bullied if they participate. One way the community could help these issues is by offering an option to do another unit like floor hockey, volleyball, or soccer. This would help students to earn a completion grade so that students would not fail.
Overall, students who feel uncomfortable because of low self-esteem, LGTBQ, or a dis/ability should have the choice to participate. If they had the option to participate in a different activity they would still earn credit and their grade would not lower.
